I was asked to design a POC of a financial simulator app to allow users to figure out what is their financial status and which type of investments best fit their needs.

Financial simulator represents one of the key entry-point for the new generation of digital financial experiences. In a world where the banks swim in a sea of sameness, building trust with prospects and clients is key to success. The goal of this POC is to allow prospects and customers to understand how their financial situation is perceived by the bank.

Result of the first design loop

User Expectations

  • I want to quickly figure out how my financial status is ranked by a bank
  • I want to have a glimpse of the solution landscape without going through a registration process
  • I want to have several options on how to engage with the bank (e.g. online and offline)

Business Expectations

  • I want to collect user data to understand better behaviours and audience needs
  • Start a relationship based on trust for both prospects and customers
  • Onboard new customers
  • Have the chance to provide a full self-service experience for optimising the costs and the ROI

Design Challenges

  • Design a mobile-first approach based on a previous desktop-only experience
  • Decrease as much as possible the stress of filling forms. The main interaction metaphor is based on providing data and relying on basic user interactions to validate them
  • Design a step-by-step process that delivers valuable outcomes to both users and business
  • Create a POC to create a low-risk environment where to test the solution and allow changes on the fly
  • Short timeline

Approach

In order to design successful experiences, I do apply the design thinking approach.
On top of that, I always try to combine the 3 key ingredients of the design thinking practice.

Toolkit

  • I used Sketch for the high-fidelity design
  • I used InVision to create a clickable prototype to test with friends and family and to collect comments
